What are the Causes of Hair Loss?

Although all of us lose hair every day sometimes we lose a great deal of hair. In fact on average a person will lose 150 strands a day. (Just look at the shower floor drain for confirmation of this simple fact.) An average hair growth cycle is in the area of 2 to 3 years. Of course everyone is different but this is the average.

In general genetic factors have a high relation to losing hair. Generally a balding father son has a significantly higher possibility of early hair loss than someone whose father has a full head of hair. But of course hair loss is not just a man problem women also face the same problem of thinning hair as they grow older.

In general losing hair is not so related to vitamins or nutritional intakes. Although it is worth noting that iron deficiencies and thyroid problems are related to increased a loss of hair.

Stress is a big factor in losing those locks. It can be from stress or surgery etc. It called Telogen Effluvium and generally only lasts two or three months. Then after roughly 6 months re-growth begins again.

The second type is Alopecia Areata. This occurs when the white blood cells attack the hair follicles. In this type, hair falls out in a matter of weeks and usually leaves bald patches. This is a more severe type.

Other common causes of thinning hair are from prescription drugs. Two big culprits in this are Zetia and Zoloft. A couple minutes of searching the internet on search words like hair loss or hair loss will produce a pretty hefty search results page with forums that discuss this common cause of hair loss.

Lastly of course is chemotherapy. This quite commonly causes a fairly rapid loss. However it isn permanent as after six to 12 months after treatments are finished, hair naturally begins to grow back as the root cause, chemotherapy has been removed.

Despite this there are quite a few alternative medicines or natural herbal remedies that can stimulate re growth such as some very common Chinese herbal remedies like: Foti, Siberian Ginseng and Shien Mien.
